Green Fleets B.C. enviroTruck Program Roll-out
BCTA members Glenncoe Transport and Paradise Island Foods, Inc. as well as R & B Trucking Ltd. (which works
under contract to BCTA member Clark Freightways) will hit the road this spring, running a total of 11 enviroTrucks
in the province. The Fraser Basin Council (FBC), BCTA's partner on environmental initiatives, selected these fleets
to participate in the Green Fleets B.C. enviroTruck program, whose purpose is to support and accelerate the adoption
of emission reduction technologies in the B.C. trucking industry. The three fleets committed to meeting a number of
technical requirements for each truck, including engine emission reductions, aerodynamic enhancements and low-rolling
resistance tires, in exchange for funding to help with costs and an agreement to participate in monitoring fuel usage
and sharing information on performance. At least for this first year, only BCTA members were eligible to participate
in the program.
By supporting green choices in the trucking sector, FBC's Green Fleets B.C. program is helping to reduce smog and
greenhouse gas emissions in B.C. "It is Green Fleets B.C.'s goal to build on the experience of the three inaugural
fleets to help develop a comprehensive strategy for market uptake of practical solutions that help save money and
decrease emissions," says Terry Robert, Program Manager, Green Fleets B.C.
For Don Coe, President of Glenncoe Transport, the Green Fleets B.C. enviroTruck program helps Glenncoe to lead the
way for both the industry and customers: "This [program] follows in lock-step with our commitment to be a leader when
it comes to providing 'green' transportation solutions to our current and future customers."
Jason Kozubal, Operations Manager of Paradise Island Foods, Inc., says that "At a time when fuel prices are setting
record highs, fuel saving technology is more important than ever."
Paul Cunnington, President of R & B Trucking Ltd., agrees that Green Fleets B.C. will help both the environment
and the industry: "We believe all companies large and small need to have a 'green' policy in place.... [our] hybrid
vehicle will not only reduce engine emissions by a minimum of 35 percent but will also offer an all-electric
refrigeration unit with zero emissions."
Green Fleets B.C. will share periodic enviroTruck updates, including surveys on fuel usage, kilometres travelled and
user experience, on their website over the next 12 months.
